Hymn Story

Fairest Lord Jesus

While some have thought that this hymn was sung by the Crusaders on their way to the Holy Land, it was probably written later –– in the 17th century –– by followers of John Hus –– Moravians fleeing persecution –– seeking refuge in Silesia, which is now southwestern Poland.  If so, it is indeed a remarkable hymn, because it says nothing of their suffering and everything of their faith.  It expresses great love of the beauties of nature –– meadows, woodlands, sunshine, moonlight, "and all the twinkling starry host."  But "Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer, Than all the angels heaven can boast."
